Scope
Choose concepts, population and study types relevant to the intended objective rather than searching indiscriminately.
Search and screen
Document databases, search strings, dates, inclusion criteria and screening decisions so others can inspect the evidence base.
Appraise quality
Evaluate methods, precision, populations and conflicts of interest rather than counting studies or relying on one striking abstract.
Map the gap
Identify unresolved mechanisms, underrepresented populations, conflicting findings or methodological limitations that a new study can feasibly address.
