Retina and vitreous
The retina contains layered sensory and neural tissue supported by specialized pigment epithelium and choroidal circulation. Vitreous and retinal interfaces affect mechanical and visual function.

Neural retina
Rods and cones transduce light, while bipolar, horizontal, amacrine and ganglion cells modify and transmit visual signals.
Macula and fovea
Cone-rich central retina provides high-acuity vision; peripheral rod distributions contribute to low-light sensitivity.
Retinal support
Retinal pigment epithelium supports photoreceptors, and inner retinal and choroidal circulations have different supply territories.
Vitreoretinal interface
Posterior vitreous detachment and traction may affect retina, but symptoms and examination findings determine clinical significance.
