Cross-sectional anatomy
Sectional anatomy integrates three-dimensional spatial relationships with axial, coronal and sagittal image planes. Accurate interpretation requires orientation and recognition of normal variation.

Coordinate planes
Axial sections traverse superior–inferior levels; sagittal planes divide left and right; coronal planes divide anterior and posterior compartments.
Modality-dependent contrast
CT attenuation and MRI signal depend on different tissue and sequence properties; a structure may appear different across techniques.
Trace vessels and organs
Track structures across adjacent slices and use multiplanar reformations rather than drawing conclusions from a single image.
Clinical and safety context
Protocol selection, contrast contraindications and radiation exposure must be considered with the indication and patient population.
