Concept 01

Target population

Define eligibility, recruitment pathways and the population to which findings may reasonably generalize.

Concept 02

Causal structure

Use subject-matter knowledge to identify plausible confounders, mediators and colliders; indiscriminate adjustment can introduce bias.

Concept 03

Effect estimation

Risk differences, risk ratios, odds ratios and hazard ratios answer different questions and may not be interchangeable.

Concept 04

Sensitivity analysis

Examine missing data, misclassification, unmeasured confounding and alternative analytic choices before making broad causal claims.

Education / safety note: Cross-sectional associations or sophisticated models alone cannot establish causality; ethics and population context remain essential.
