Concept 01

Birth context

Review gestational age, delivery and relevant pregnancy history before interpreting an infant’s respiratory, neurological or feeding findings.

Concept 02

General appearance

Observe alertness, temperature, respiratory effort and perfusion within an age-appropriate assessment framework.

Concept 03

Systematic assessment

A trained clinician examines cardiovascular, respiratory, abdominal, musculoskeletal, neurological and skin findings while respecting infant comfort and caregiver involvement.

Concept 04

Communication and follow-up

Record observations, address caregiver concerns, review feeding and jaundice risk, and arrange appropriate assessment when an abnormality or warning sign is present.

Education / safety note: A written guide cannot replace supervised newborn examination, neonatal resuscitation skills or local postnatal care protocols.
