Concept 01

Ischemia

An ischemic stroke occurs when impaired arterial supply deprives brain tissue of oxygen and glucose.

Concept 02

Hemorrhage

An intracerebral or subarachnoid hemorrhage produces injury through bleeding and secondary effects; distinguishing it from ischemia usually requires urgent imaging.

Concept 03

Localization

Sudden face, arm or speech changes, vision loss, severe imbalance and other deficits may reflect the affected brain territory; atypical presentations also occur.

Concept 04

Time and safety

Onset or last-known-well time, neurological examination, glucose and urgent imaging inform specialist decisions; a suspected stroke is a medical emergency.

Education / safety note: Never use this website to determine stroke subtype or eligibility for interventions. Suspected stroke requires emergency medical services.
