Informed clinical consent is a communication process in which a patient with decision-making capacity voluntarily authorizes a proposed intervention after receiving appropriate information.

Explain the decision
Describe what is proposed and why, including expected benefit, relevant material risks and appropriate alternatives.
Check understanding
Ask the patient to summarize essential elements and provide suitable interpretation or accessible information when needed.
Respect voluntariness
Allow questions and adequate decision time where possible; legal exceptions and surrogate consent require applicable jurisdictional guidance.
Document accurately
Record the discussion, authorization, participants and key questions; a signed form alone does not guarantee meaningful consent.
